Transformers in vegetable ester or oil
What is vegetable oil?
It is a natural biodegradable ester obtained from vegetable seeds (maize, soya, rapeseed, etc.) and whose formulation excludes antioxidant additives, because the refining process to which it is subjected conserves its own natural antioxidants.
Its natural properties enable it to be used as a liquid dielectric:
- It possesses high dielectric strength values owing to its high water saturation point.
- It is highly resistant to fire.
- Flash point >300 ºC.
- Fire point >350 ºC. which is why it is classified as a K liquid in accordance with IEC Standard 61100.
What makes it different from other electric liquids?
- Better performance in fire situations.
- Extremely biodegradable in soils and water, because of its natural composition.
- It is not ecotoxic.
- It can be reused in other eco-friendly products at the ending of its working life.
The electric characteristics and the size of the transformer are not affected.
It is not necessary to install fixed fire-extinguishing systems, necessary for dielectric oils whose volumes are > 400 l. and combustion temperatures that are < 300º C. (applicable in Spain according to RAT (High Voltage Regulations))
It is not necessary to have oil-collection containers in indoor installations, which is a condition for volumes > 50 l. (applicable in Spain according to RAT (High Voltage Regulations)).
Advantages over dry transformers
- Improved loss rate: dry transformers have no-load and load level losses that are higher than transformers submerged in dielectric liquid.
Such a difference leads to an increase in annual losses during operations of more than 50%. - Less noise: dry transformers emit a sound-power noise-level that is 10 to 15 dB higher than transformers submerged in dielectric liquid.
- Better response to overloading.
- Longer working life.
- Less room required, no outer safety and security distance is required.
